Big love for these sticky Coca Cola wings
I am such a weirdo sometimes …I had to buy some groceries at the oriental shop the other day and as I was waiting for one of the ladies to get me some vegetables, I got talking to the guy that stood next to me in line. He was Chinese, doing a masters here in the Netherlands and within the next 5 minutes he tested my knowledge on Chinese cooking and eating. I passed he said. Hehehe..pffiieewww..mentioning things like “wow..you really cook like Chinese people and you know quite a bit on how to and what to use more specifically”. Of course I asked him what his favorite dish is and he told me Coca Cola chicken wings. He said, that it was by far his favorite and sooo easy to make..it got me intrigued. I am definitely a Coca Cola lover <no pepsi for me> so I did my research and wanted to give it a go. Never had I cooked these, until today. They came out nice sticky, almost no coke flavored wings. Its easy and finger licking good! Always Coca Cola wings.
Coca Cola Chicken Wings – side dish
Chicken wings and drumsticks – 12
2 cloves of garlic, grated
4 slices of ginger (about 2 mm thick)
1 dried red chili
1 can of coca cola (330ml)
1/4 cup of light soy sauce
2 TBsp of shaoxing rice wine
Toasted sesame seeds
1 spring onion – sliced
Start with washing your chicken and draining it.
Cut away excess fat and slice your wings horizontally. By doing this, the sauce will also get inside the chicken.
In a wok, add 2 TBsp of oil and add in the chicken wings. Fry on both sides until golden brown and a little crispy.
Remove the chicken wings but keep the oil.
In the same wok, add your ginger, garlic, and your dried chili and fry until fragrant. Don’t let the garlic burn.
Add in the light soy sauce, the cooking wine and the Coca cola. Bring to boil.
When boiling, add in the chicken wings and simmer on low heat.
Continue to do so until the sauce has thickened and is nice and sticky. Make sure to stir your chicken wings every now and then and
keep looking as you don’t want your sauce to get burnt.
Transfer to a plate and sprinkle some sesame seeds and spring onions.
