Brrrr, are you guys just as cold as I am these days? I sure am and as I am not feeling 100% this week, I decided to make me some comfort and power food. I was really craving a hot boerenkool stampot aka kale hash served with a lot of gravy on top. I did add a little twist to it, an Asian twist, as I was cooking for the Koken met aanbiedingen app. Yep it was time for another recipe and thats why I came up with Boerenkool stamppot with an Indonesian meatball, sort of 😉

My mother in law will nodd and say “this” must go in and oh oh.. you forgot to add this, but in this post I will add the additional steps I learnt from her. Actually this meatball is normally served next to Gado Gado. So now I give you inspiration to cook not one, but two dishes, right ;)!

KMA Culinessa 3 1024x682 - Boerenkool stamppot (Kale Hash) with an Indonesian meatball

Recipe for Boerenkool stamppot with an Indonesian meatball

Ingredients
300 gr Kale

600 gr Potatoes
Milk
30 gr butter

500 gr ground meat (half pork, half beef)
1 egg
1 clove of garlic – mashed
1 Medium onion – chopped up
1 tomato – chopped up
5 TBsp Kecap manis
100 ml water
1 TBsp Butter

Oil
Salt and pepper
[optional: 2 TBsp of breadcrumbs]
[optional: 1/2 tsp nutmeg]

Method
In a big pan, add potatoes and kale on top.
Add enough water and start boiling.
Let it boil for about 15-20 minutes and drain.
In the mean time you can make the meatballs.
In a bowl, mix the ground meat with the garlic, egg, nutmeg, breadcrumbs and season with salt and pepper.
Make 4 big meatballs from the meat mixture.
In a pan, add in enough oil to cover the meatballs by 1/3. Fry your meatballs till they’ve browned an all sides.
In another pan, add in butter and onions and cook until they are translucent.
Add in the meatballs and cook for another 3 minutes.
Now add in kecap manis, tomato, water and let it all simmer for about 15 minutes on low heat.
If desired, season with salt and pepper.
Use a potato masher, to create a kale potato mash.
For a nice smooth texture, add in a drop of milk and 1 TBsp of butter.
Heat up for another 5 minutes.

Serve the boerenkool stamppot with the Indonesian meatball. For some extra spice, serve with some sambal badjak.

Selamat Makan and till next time 😉
